At the centre of the front of the cross, following tradition, is the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. To the Lord's left is the holy righteous prince Alexander Nevsky, and to His right the holy righteous prince Dmitry Donskoy. The holy princes are venerated as patrons of warriors and defenders against enemies both bodily and spiritual. Above the Crucifixion is the image of St Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow, venerated as a helper in the raising of children and as a healer, especially of ailments of the eyes. Below is the icon of St Sergius of Radonezh, the great wonderworker and healer, to whom people turn in various illnesses, in difficult circumstances of life, and when children struggle with their studies. The reverse of the cross depicts the Archangel Michael, Commander of the Heavenly Host. The mighty Archangel is venerated as the patron of warriors and of all who are faithful to God and wage war against the powers of evil, as the defender of the souls of the departed and the guardian of the gates of paradise. Above him is the blessing right hand, a sign of the presence of God. Around are the symbols of the four evangelists: the eagle (John), the lion (Mark), the ox (Luke) and the angel (Matthew).
