The front of the cross depicts the Holy Face of the Saviour, the Image Not Made by Hands, which He Himself imprinted upon a cloth and sent for the healing of the leprous king of Edessa. Since that time the Image Not Made by Hands has been venerated as the most powerful protective symbol of Christianity. The reverse bears the opening verses of the protective prayer to the Precious Cross of the Lord. This prayer is recited in times of danger and carried on one's person for protection against evil powers: "Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from before His face. As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish before the face of those who love God."
