Baptismal crosses of straight form with three-lobed ends to the arms were once widespread. They symbolised the enlightenment of all the ends of the earth by the light of Christian teaching and of faith in the Most Holy Trinity. The front of such crosses was always adorned with the image of the Crucifixion, and it is placed on our cross as well. The principal four-pointed cross is crossed in addition by two shorter arms.
On the reverse, surrounded by attendant angels, is the image of the miracle-working "Seven Arrows" Icon of the Mother of God. Before this icon people pray for the softening of hardened hearts and for relief from sufferings of soul and body. The Mother of God in this image is also entreated in prayer for one's enemies — that enmity may soften and reconciliation come. "Most Holy Mother of God, save us" is inscribed beside the icon.
